A Flathead Lake Montana Wedding | Jess & Matt

Jess and Matt celebrating on Flathead Lake during their Montana wedding

For Jess and Matt, their wedding on Flathead Lake was more than a celebration of their marriage. It was also a final Montana adventure before the two of them moved out of state and began a new chapter together.

Set on their family’s lakeside property, their July wedding felt relaxed, personal, and completely connected to the place they called home. A warm summer breeze came off the lake throughout the day, the mountains provided the backdrop, and the entire celebration felt like one last big gathering with the people who had made Montana home for them.

It was exactly the kind of wedding we love filming.

Their wedding film begins with a letter from Matt to Jess before taking us through the entire day — getting ready, the ceremony, portraits along the lake, dinner, speeches, and a night of dancing.

For us, the goal of a wedding film isn't simply to document what happened. It's to bring you back to how the day actually felt.

A Summer Wedding on Flathead Lake

There is something pretty special about getting married on Flathead Lake.

The lake, mountains, open sky, and long Montana summer evenings create an incredible setting, but what we love most is how naturally the landscape becomes part of the wedding. Instead of feeling like a backdrop that you visit for a few portraits, the outdoors can be part of the entire experience.

Jess and Matt's wedding took place on their family's property, which made the day especially personal. Friends and family gathered by the water, the ceremony unfolded outside, and the lake was never far from the celebration.

And then there was the breeze.

Anyone who has spent time around Flathead Lake knows that the water can bring its own weather to the day. For a wedding film, that movement is beautiful — dresses moving in the wind, hair catching the breeze, water changing behind the couple, and all of those little moments that make an outdoor wedding feel alive.

A Wedding Film Built Around Their Story

One of our favorite parts of Jess and Matt's day was the letter Matt wrote to Jess.

Rather than just beginning the film with a series of establishing shots or a traditional introduction, we wanted to start with something personal. Hearing his words immediately brings you into their story and gives the rest of the film an emotional foundation.

We like letting those moments tell the story rather than forcing a wedding into a predetermined formula.

The result is a film that feels less like a highlight reel and more like a memory you can step back into.

Planning a Flathead Lake Wedding

If you're considering a wedding on Flathead Lake, one of the biggest advantages is the ability to make the day feel incredibly personal.

A private property can give you more freedom to build the celebration around what matters to you — whether that's a quiet ceremony by the water, a long dinner with family, an outdoor dance floor, or simply having more time to enjoy the people you've brought together.

There are also a few practical things worth considering.

Plan for the wind

The lake breeze can be beautiful, but it's worth considering when planning your ceremony, hair and makeup, decorations, candles, and audio. A little flexibility in your timeline and setup can go a long way.

Pay attention to the light

Flathead Lake gives you incredible opportunities throughout the day, but the light changes quickly. Building some flexibility into your timeline allows you to take advantage of beautiful evening light without having to pull yourselves away from the celebration for too long.

Leave room to actually enjoy your wedding

One of our biggest recommendations for couples planning a Montana wedding is to avoid filling every minute of the day.

You don't need to spend your entire wedding being photographed.

Give yourselves time to sit with your friends. Take a few minutes alone together. Eat dinner. Dance. Go down to the lake.

Those unscripted moments are often some of the most meaningful parts of the day — and they're some of our favorite moments to film.

Montana Wedding Videography

We're based in Montana and love documenting weddings throughout the state and beyond. From lakeside celebrations around Flathead Lake and the Flathead Valley to destination weddings in Whitefish, Glacier National Park, Big Sky, Yellowstone, and the surrounding mountain towns, we're drawn to weddings that feel connected to the people and places that make them special.

Jess and Matt's wedding was a perfect example of that.

It wasn't about creating a picture-perfect version of Montana.

It was about capturing their Montana.

Their family property. Their friends. The lake. The wind. The laughter. The people who had been part of their lives before they left for their next chapter.

And one last summer celebration together.
